All railways running through Toronto depend on a working drainage system to ensure optimal railway safety. Good railway companies use a combination of techniques to properly drain a railway track. These techniques include the use of radar, ditching, specialized excavations, track lifting, shoulder ballast cleaning, and undercutting. An under cutter is a machine that lifts up pieces of the track to create a sub ballast layer. This leads to a track with a reliable and sturdy structure. Ditchers, naturally, are machines that do ditching. However, they are also able to undercut and create irrigation channels. Some ditchers can move up to 750 tons of material in just one hour, which is a lot of work for even an industrial machine. These machines are also designed with clever tools. Some have hydraulic systems to help their cranes move. Some can rotate while their base stays stationary. Others have attachments such as blades or forklifts. These attachments are to help the machines specialize in their various tasks.

Drainers are also focused on the quality of the materials they use on the railways. If ballast has been fouled, it has to be removed. There are various machines that go about this task. Some of them are the aforementioned under cutters; others are more specialized versions of an under cutter. Some railway track, because of its sub grade, becomes routinely fouled; It’s sub grade is completely unredeemable and spoiled. In this type of situation, the drainers will completely remove the sub grade. They replace the deficient sub grade by taking away the ballast and sub-ballast; they then replace these two components with a formation protection layer and some newer, better ballast. The formation protection layer on the bottom acts as an insulator to the new ballast- it keeps the earth below it from fouling the ballast.

These drainage systems make railways more storm ready. They are profusely helpful in very rainy cities or cities that are subject to unpredictable weather. A train is unable to run on a flooded railway; flooded railways often lead to severe accidents or damage to the mechanisms of the train. Usually, a flooded railway will cause a delay to a trip. Hours upon hours can be spent waiting at a station as a result of improper drainage on a railway system. Of course drainage services don’t only do railroads. Most give services to areas of a domestic nature. Drainage services in Canada are able to take care of any home draining problems that keep homeowners up at night.
